Consumer Pole Replacement in Perth Hills
A consumer pole is the privately owned power pole on your property that holds the overhead service line clear of the ground. In WA the property owner is responsible for it, including replacing it when it's worn out. OTOLEC is a licensed consumer pole replacement electrician based in Chidlow, working across the Perth Hills and rural WA.

Got a Western Power defect notice?
Western Power inspects the first private pole on a property, the one carrying its service line. If that pole is defective, the notice gives the owner either 30 or 90 days to replace it, depending on its condition. If it isn't replaced in time, the property can be disconnected for safety and a reconnection fee applies. The inspection is free; the replacement is the owner's cost.
Replacing the pole needs a licensed electrical contractor. Call OTOLEC with the notice in hand and we can talk through the replacement and the paperwork that goes with it.

Signs a pole needs attention
WA's Building and Energy guidelines ask owners to check private poles and lines at least once a year, and after storms, strong winds or heavy rain. Look for:
- a leaning, cracked or rotting timber pole, or termite (white-ant) damage
- significant rust on a steel pole
- brackets pulling away, damaged stay wires or split cross-arms
- broken wire strands, damaged insulators or a line sagging lower than the rest
Damage inside a timber pole often can't be seen from outside. Sawn timber poles should be replaced whatever their condition, and the guidelines say hardwood poles likely to have been in service for more than 25 years should be replaced or reinforced.
What's included
- Assessment of the existing pole, line and connection
- Replacement with a permitted pole type: galvanised steel, fibre-reinforced cement or CCA-treated timber
- Discussion of putting the private supply underground instead
- Lodging the required notices with the network operator and an Electrical Safety Certificate for the work
- Testing before the supply is restored
Replace, or go underground?
WA guidance recommends underground cable when poles reach the end of their life: there's no pole left to maintain, and it removes the risk of a private line starting a bushfire. Rocky ground or a long run can make underground impractical, and then a new overhead pole may be the right call. OTOLEC can talk through both options for your property.
In bushfire country
Large parts of the Perth Hills are mapped bushfire prone, including almost all of Kalamunda and Mundaring. The private-pole guidelines recommend keeping the base of poles and the ground under lines clear of vegetation, and a fire-protection coating on treated timber poles in fire-prone areas. Keep trees at least 2 m from lines, and never climb a pole or prune near live wires yourself.

Your questions answered
Who is responsible for the power pole on my property?
The property owner. Western Power inspects the first private pole, but maintaining and replacing every private pole and line on the property is the owner's responsibility. Where a pole is shared, all the owners sharing it are responsible.
I'm renting and got a defect notice. What should I do?
Forward it to your landlord or property manager straight away, since replacing the pole is the owner's responsibility.
Can any electrician do a consumer pole replacement?
The work must be done by a licensed electrical worker. OTOLEC holds WA Electrical Contractor Licence EC16326.
What type of pole will it be replaced with?
New and replacement private poles must be galvanised steel, fibre-reinforced cement or CCA-treated timber. Sawn and untreated timber poles aren't permitted. We'll explain the options for your site.
Do you travel to Perth Hills for consumer pole replacement?
Yes. OTOLEC services the Perth Hills, Perth metro and rural WA from Chidlow. Call about your property and the notice or pole condition.
