EV Charger Installation in Perth Hills
A dedicated EV charger charges your car faster than a standard power point, but it adds a large new load to your property. In WA your installer has to check that load against your connection before the charger is switched on. OTOLEC is a licensed EV charger installer based in Chidlow, working across the Perth Hills, Perth metro and rural WA.

Will my connection handle it?
A standard Western Power connection allows up to 63 A single-phase or 32 A per phase three-phase. Western Power gives a 7 kW single-phase charger as an example that fits a standard connection. Before installation, your EV charger installer calculates the property's maximum demand with the charger added. If there isn't enough capacity, the options are a connection upgrade or a smart charger that limits how much it draws from the grid.

What the network requires
- The main switch must be a circuit breaker for EV charging connections, so older switchboards may need an upgrade first
- The network operator must be notified before the charger is connected and switched on
- Bidirectional chargers (vehicle-to-home or vehicle-to-grid) count as embedded generation and need Western Power's written approval
What's included
- Maximum demand check against your connection
- Switchboard and main switch assessment
- A dedicated circuit and charger installation
- Network notification and an Electrical Safety Certificate
- Testing and a run-through of the charger
Home and business
At home, think about where you park, how far the charger is from the switchboard, and whether you plan solar or a second EV. For businesses, offices and units, new buildings in WA have had to include "EV ready" provisions since 1 May 2025.

Your questions answered
What size EV charger can I have?
It depends on your connection and existing load. A 7 kW single-phase charger fits a standard connection, but your installer has to check the maximum demand first.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?
Western Power requires the main switch to be a circuit breaker for EV charging. If yours is an older switch, it will need upgrading.
Can I install a vehicle-to-home charger?
Yes, with approval. Bidirectional chargers need an embedded generation application and written approval from Western Power before connection.
Is OTOLEC a licensed EV charger installer?
Yes. OTOLEC holds WA Electrical Contractor Licence EC16326.
Do you travel to Perth Hills for EV charger installation?
Yes. OTOLEC services the Perth Hills, Perth metro and rural WA from Chidlow.
