Sub Mains in Perth Hills

A sub main is the cable that runs from your main switchboard to a second switchboard: in a shed, workshop, granny flat or pump house. On larger hills properties these runs can be long, and the cable has to suit both the distance and the load. OTOLEC is a licensed sub mains electrician based in Chidlow, working across the Perth Hills and rural WA.

When you need one

Underground or overhead?

WA's electrical requirements recommend underground consumer sub mains on rural properties with an overhead supply, and new private power lines should generally be underground. Rocky ground or very long runs can make that impractical, and an overhead run then has to use permitted poles and insulated cable. Before any digging, check for underground services at byda.com.au.

Sized for the run and the load

The cable is sized so the voltage drop over the distance stays within the Australian Standards, and so the total load stays within your connection. A standard Western Power connection allows up to 63 A single-phase or 32 A per phase three-phase. If new buildings or equipment raise the property's maximum demand, the network operator must be told.

What's included

  • Assessment of the main switchboard, the route and the load at the far end
  • Cable sizing for the distance and equipment
  • A sub-board at the new building, with the required protection
  • Lodging the required notices (adding or upgrading a sub main is notifiable work in WA) and an Electrical Safety Certificate
  • Testing at both ends

Your questions answered

Do I need a licensed electrician for a sub main to my shed?

Yes. All electrical work in WA must be done by a licensed electrical worker, and adding or upgrading a sub main is notifiable work. OTOLEC holds WA Electrical Contractor Licence EC16326.

Can my neighbour and I share a bore pump?

WA rules allow a shared pump to be supplied from either property, but only one supply may serve it at a time, a changeover-switch arrangement isn't acceptable, and a lockable isolating switch must sit next to the pump. A sub mains electrician can set this up correctly.

Will my shed need a new switchboard?

A sub main normally ends at a sub-board in the shed or building. We'll check what's there and what your equipment needs.

Do you travel to Perth Hills for sub mains?

Yes. OTOLEC services the Perth Hills, Perth metro and rural WA from Chidlow.
